Here comes the best channel strip vst plugin in recent times; Waves Scheps omni channel plugin . This plugin was designed in collaboration with Grammy-winning mixer Andrew Scheps (Adele, Jay Z, Metallica). This versatile channel strip simulates Scheps time-tested combinations of compression, EQ, saturation colors and more – all tailored to work together harmoniously and cohesively.

As the handy and efficient mixing tools that they are, channel strips provide all the basic processing like – EQ, compression, gating, and often more – in a single modular unit which makes mixing easier. Most Channel strip plugins around emulate vintage mixing consoles which often sound amazing, but limits sound engineers specific and limited sonic color. Modular channel strip plugins allow mixing and matching of various processors with flexibility, but the different processors might not work together cohesively and won’t necessarily interact as a true channel strip. Scheps Omni Channel combines the function of both by giving you the best of both worlds. Due to his experience from years of mixing diverse music genres, Andrew Scheps has perfected certain combinations of go-to processors – some based on classic hardware units, some being innovative modules developed from scratch – each with its own unique character. They are all now provided to you in one flexible yet fully cohesive channel strip plugin.

Waves Scheps Omni Channel plugin features five modules (Preamp, Compression, EQ, De-esser, Gate) that can be used in any order you like. The Preamp module which provides three different types of analog saturation lets you add different colors of harmonic distortion as well as filters and thump (resonance) controls. The Compression section features 3 completely different compressors ranging from fast to slow and smooth, plus a unified control set which makes it easy to quickly compare them. It also features a Wet/Dry control which allows you to parallel compress within the module. The EQ module is a 4-band equalizer with each band providing a distinct musical sound that holds up on its own. In case your mix requires surgical EQ, the EQ can be switched to fully parametric mode for precision. The DS2 module, though primarily serves as a de-esser, can serve a lot more purpose. It can serve as ‘de-anything’ ; de-harsher, de-edger, de-mud, e.t.c. With its two full-range bands and four filter types, you can remove any offending frequencies, not just S’s or T’s. The Gate module does not only give you all the standard controls (threshold, attack and release) for gating/expansion, but enables the adjustment and maximum noise reduction to maintain a consistent noise floor.

To cap all these amazing features up, the waves Scheps Omni Channel plugin features an insert slot where you can insert any additional Waves plugin of your choice, including an extra instance of any of the Scheps Omni Channel modules. Amazingly so, like other default modules, this insert slot can be moved around and positioned anywhere in the chain. Suitably for live sound, Scheps Omni Channel offers zero latency and full discrete control over each stereo channel. Selected controls of the compressor, EQ and filters can be mapped mapped conveniently to the eMotion LV1 live mixing console, serving as the console’s channel strip.
Additionally, you get a set of ‘Focus’ presets, created for various sound sources, which highlight the most important controls you should be focusing on to achieve a good sound in your current task. Irrespective of which musical genre you are working on, waves Scheps Omni Channel plugin will help you stay focused while you mix. You can quickly compare sonic characters with just a few clicks, customize your signal flow easily inside one interface, and be rest assured that you will get sounds that ‘work’ together harmoniously and cohesively.

This plugin, like every other channel strip plugins will help you get your mixes sounding good quicker, because channel strips help one to stay focused while mixing. Besides that, this one has varieties of vibes and color to spice up your music. Demo it, and see if you’ll love it. I bet you will. 1. I’ve been using this for a couple of weeks now and have been using it while mixing a project. Here’s a quickie review of each section.
Saturation – I’m not a fan of any saturation effect. I prefer to use a real preamp for the sound I want. This one does sound good if you’re into that.
Compressor – Sounds good. You have three options (Opto/VCA/FET) and they all do the job and sound decent in their own way. Not sure it’s a huge upgrade from Logic’s built in options, but is still good.
EQ – This is the money section. It is worth having the plug in just for this. While the API is more forward in its sound, this has more clarity. For vocals, acous guitar, strings, anything where you really want openness, it sounds excellent. I think the curve shapes have been set well, especially in the midrange where so many problems occur.
De-esser – Also very good. It may not be better than others in it’s sound, having two is awesome. Very nice tool.
Gate – Haven’t used it much.

Being able to turn off components, switch the order, and insert your own (Waves only) plugin is great, and the versatility has improved my workflow. Pretty quickly you’ll set up your own regular template.

I got it for $29, which is ridiculous, as it’s worth far more. If you’re looking for a go-to strip, you should consider this.

    • Pretty nice quick review Ezra. Succinct and informative. Yeah, it’s a very good plugin. If you are starting out and need a very good channel strip to start with, Waves Omni Channel is it. You won’t regret it ever. Thanks.
