The idea

Enter the world of unlimited referencing possibilities, with not only the virtual simulation of several types and variations of spaces, but also of different playback output sources. Imagine having the opportunity to listen to your mix not just in a car, but two different types of vehicles. How do you want it; SUV, hatcback? Or on various monitor speakers you wish you own; Focal Twin, Neumann KH 120, KRK Rockits, Genelec 8040, mix cubes, and a lot more. All which where wittily labelled because of, you know why. LOL. Of course, the effectiveness of this plug-in and others of its kind will depend primarily on the speakers you are using it with, and the studio room treatment. So, it will take a pair of fairly transparent high definition speakers with reasonable frequency response that spans from the highest highs, to the lowest lows (around 45 Hz to 18 KHz) or better to get the best results. The cool features

The monitor selection menus have these various drop-downs labeled in Capital letters H, A, B, and C. The experience

The installation was pretty straightforward. Though the initial installer was buggy on some systems, Oscillot swiftly provided an update that fixed all that. An evidence of top notch customer support. The authorization was as smooth as breeze. No dongles, just insert the license key and you are done. Opening it, it has a very lovely UI, with well laid out menu. The first obvious step was to test it with my previous reference mixes whose sounds I’m used to. I browsed through the several speakers simulations in there to find the suitable ones. I found three that sounded different in characters and started switching between those. After some detailed listening, i figured some minor details that can be tweaked to make the mix better. I made some EQ and volume decisions that weren’t so obvious previously.driver booster 6.4

Making very slight adjustments with the plugin on while switching around made the original mix with perspective bypassed a tad cleaner and more balanced. I was able to tighten up the low end after removing some discreet “muffles” that got obvious after using some perspective profiles. Like I said earlier, I own a pair of the Yamaha HS8 (codenamed Japan modern 8), and they worked well with the Focal twin, Genelec 8040 and Neumann KH 120 profiles the most to reveal things.

I know some of you doubt the efficiency of these sorts of plugins, as these type of plugins cannot totally replace the experience of listening on another speaker set. Well, according to Oscillot this plugin was created through years-long painstaking research, which helped to closely simulate the frequency response and EQ curves of the modelled speakers. For example, the signatory sound of the “yellow coned” Rockits sounded familiar when referencing the profile. Pretty similar.

Also, in recreating the known character of the legendary Yamaha NS10, they craftily recreated the filtered high and low frequencies, thus shifting the focus on the quality of the midrange. Monitoring and checking your mix with this particular settings will help you concentrate on the midrange to make it shine more. We all know that the midrange has the most prominent frequencies that determine how well your mixes shine. Of course you will have to check with the plugin bypassed time to time, so as not to focus on the midrange at the detriment of other frequencies.

Final thoughts

Overall, Oscillot perspective is is a useful tool that can come in handy while trying to get your mix right. From my test so far, it is much more than a simple EQ-curves mimicking process. There’s definitely more to it because the transient response in various speaker profiles differ accordingly. After all, Oscillot stated that if Perspective allows for a particular combination (Hardware speaker to desired speaker), the resulting sound is that of the desired speaker having an accuracy of more than 80 dB cancellation in null testing with the real thing. The additional features are a plus, while talkback feature alone is worth the price tag. You can even use the plugin as a creative effect a la Audioease’s Speakerphone, by using the “smartphone” or “laptop speakers” profile. There are lots of possibilities with this plugin, so it’s definitely worth acquiring.

When not well tuned, sound system’s frequency response behave erratically. Liquidsonics ventured on a tasking quest to breathe life into the static nature of impulse responses (IR) used by convolution reverbs, and this led the birth of their groundbreaking ‘Fusion IR’ technology. The giant DSP company always hold their own spot in any best audio plugins list. Though on the reverb side of things, they have numerous plugins that could have easily made the list, here the worthy representative is Waves H-Reverb. The ‘H’ in the name stands for hybrid, because Waves combined the features of both convolution and algorithmic reverb types in creating this sophisticated plugin.
It is common to use additional processors like EQ, filters, de-essers, compressors or even gates after reverbs in order to fine-tune the reverb sound and help it blend in more with the mix. Waves had those kinds of situations in mind while designing their H-Reverb, hence they integrated all of those functionalities and more into a single plugin. Do you need a pretty nice sounding reverb with that ‘old school’ type of vibe? The EMT 140 and EMT 250 vintage reverb emulation plugins from UAD are the reverbs to choose. As obvious in the names, these plugins emulate the revered classic hardware reverb units manufactured by EMT Studiotechnik GmbH, which also endorsed these plug-in versions by UAD. The EMT 140 Classic Plate Reverb Plug-in delivers the organic lushness that can only be gotten from a plate reverb. Overloud Breverb-2

This one is definitely the most underrated reverb plugin out there. Even though Overloud is known to always put out very good plugins, it still beats me and a whole lot of other people why this particular plugin by them is not getting as much buzz as it deserves. I think it is partly due to the fact that people are judging it from the performance of the original first issue, which wasn’t that bad. That is where they got it all wrong, because Breverb 2 is miles ahead of ‘Breverb 1’.

Breverb-2 is a high quality, clean, and flexible algorithmic reverb plugin that has a lovely looking, interface built to look like LARC remote controls for Lexicon 480L hardware reverbs. It is not all about its good look though, it definitely has an amazing sound to match. It offers seven main space algorithms, which range from Hall, to Plate, Room, Inverse, Small places, plus other large spaces. The signal flow starts from the input, goes through the reverb algorithm, from there to the equalizer section, down to the gate sections and finally to output. 2CAudio Breeze 2

Whenever reverb is the discussion, not mentioning 2CAudio and their amazing trio reverb plugins bundle(the perfect storm) will be a great oversight. Aether, Breeze, and B2 were phenomenal when they came into the scene some years back. They’ve all stood the test of time and cannot easily be displaced whenever there is a line up of best reverbs. Aether, especially is a sound designers workhorse tool, with so much tweak-ability it offers. The only issue with these plugins in the past was that they were so CPU tasking, the more reason they were not that much of people’s favorite. This shouldn’t really be an issue nowadays because an average modern computer packs enough power to run them smoothly.

However, 2CAudio is taking things to the next level with the total overhaul of these plugins, starting with the release of Breeze 2, which is surprisingly very CPU efficient. 2C Audio’s existing algorithms were rebuilt completely from the ground up, which made Breeze 2 twice as fast as Breeze 1 on average. With this, you get the revered 2CAudio reverb sound without strangling your CPU. One thing I really love about 2CAudio’s reverbs is the availability of unlimited useful presets through their sale of additional preset packs.

Water as plug-in is characterized by a large number of important Core 12 tech features, making it an incarnation of a classy vintage hardware sound in a new guise. Just as with Cream suite, we believe that Water can be considered another highly valuable plugin representing a perfect fusion between Vintage and Modern – Analogue and Digital. Water brings a new frontier in the world of audio software.

WATER suite was carefully crafted with the goal of building a set of characterful tools that reproduce the sonic behaviorof ultra-rare vintage hardware devices and include new features making it flexible and suitable for the demands of modern productions. Water embodies the spirit of revolution and the desire to experiment typical of the 1960s!

Included in the WATER suite are three different plug-ins:

• WATER Channel-strip;
• WATER EQ (Passive Germanium Equalizer standalone module);

For each plugins included in Water suite there is a “Standard” version or an alternative “ZL*” version which operates at *zero latency at the cost of consuming extra processing resources and is thus suitable for use when tracking.

The Water EQ is created from an original passive stereo Germanium topology EQ unit dating back to 1961 and a set of ‘Homebrew’ additional hardware circuits, hand-built using original components and sampled by SoundDrops (SteDal). SteDal’s meticulous designs, following the original circuit schematics, helped us to include not just 9dB of boost for the MID band, as it is in the original, but also a 9dB of cut. In a similar way we also added extra frequency choices for the LF and HF bands and the high-pass filter. Further to this, within the standalone unit we added mid-side and dual-mono operation modes. As always with such modules, we provide the option to switch on and off the pass-though tone distortions of the original HW, allowing the user to avoid or embrace the frequency, phase and harmonic distortions of the gear.

The Water Limiter/Compressor is based on a 1968, discretely built, diode bridge device that delivers an overwhelming sound. With three of some of the very best transformers in the audio path, it gives a smooth, larger than life coloration that is reminiscent of classic legendary tube devices. Made in the ’60s the hardware is unfortunately very rare to find these days. Our take on this design is to make this great device even more flexible and powerful: we have included the extras of an attack shape modulation control, high-range HPF in the side-chain, some additional faster release curves derived from the Ebony mod. D473 VCA compressor, the ability to switch on and off the pass-though tone of the original HW unit, and a dry/wet control for parallel compression. We also managed to add a high-quality hardware modeled clipper at the output for this dream compressor!
